Walkthrough of the current BMW X lineup
The BMW X lineup can be a little confusing at first glance. It starts with the X1 and the X2 which are both based on the Series 1 platform. Above that, you have the X3 and the X4 which are both based on the Series 3 platform. In fact, the BMW X4 is largely based on the BMW X3 except the X4 has a coupe roofline.

Similarly, the BMW X5 and X6 are both based on the 5 Series platform and the X6 has a coupe roofline. Finally, the X7 is based on the 7 Series platform making it the largest. Below, we’ll take a closer look at the BMW X3 and X4.
2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 BMW X4
Both the BMW X3 and BMW X4 are remarkably similar for 2022. They offer the same powertrain with the same performance specs, both offer all-wheel drive, though the X4 is only offered with all-wheel drive, and both even have an M version with a 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds.
Where these two models really differ is in outward appearance and interior room. The X4, as we said before, has the coupe roofline. It still has four doors, but the roof begins sloping back down right at the b-pillar for a sleeker look. The body also is 3 inches shorter in height and almost 3 inches longer in length.
That sleeker look does come at the cost of interior room. The second row still gets the same shoulder room but a little less legroom and headroom. The X4 does sacrifice some cargo room as well with only 18.5 cubic-feet behind the second row as compared to 28.7 cubic-feet behind the rear row for the X3. These are all things you will have to weigh if you are stuck deciding between the two models.
