Luxury shoppers in the market for a midsize sedan can find plenty of options on the lot at dealerships. These models combine compact driving dimensions, generous and well-appointed interior space, and attractive fuel economy to make the daily commute or a longer adventure a study in comfort. In this 2018 BMW 5 Series vs 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comparison, we are looking at the midsize sedan offerings from two heavy-hitting German brands.

While both of these models bring a lot of value and quality to the road, the standard 2018 BMW 530i offers an immediate level of value and performance that the starting 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 300 struggles to match. Even though these two base models have a similar starting price, the BMW offers advantages in cargo space, fuel economy, and even in engine power. Both of these models seat five passengers and offer attractive styling.

Powertrain Efficiency and Interior Space of the 2018 BMW 5 Series

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is available in several different models, but for this comparison we are focusing on the base gasoline-powered option. The base 2018 BMW 530i model comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and mileage of up to 24 mpg with city driving and 34 mpg on the highway. In contrast the base 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 300 sedan offers just 22 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway with its base 241-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. While the Mercedes-Benz engine does offer more torque than the BMW base model, it's lower mileage poses a disadvantage when it comes to daily commuting.

In this 2018 BMW 5 Series vs 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comparison, the BMW also offers more trunk space than its Mercedes-Benz rival. The BMW offers over five more cubic feet than the E-Class, with 18.7 cubic feet of space in the trunk. Both of these models also come standard with rear-wheel drive, five passenger seating, and comfort and convenience features like automatic climate control. This BMW model also comes standard with 12 speakers, compared to eight standard speakers on the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 300.
